The 2017 Southwest Drift Series comes to an end as this weekend, 21 drivers made their way to Musselman Honda Circuit in Tucson, AZ for the last round of the Vegas Drift Southwest Drift series presented by Vegas Drift. Most of the drivers were local who made the short two-hour drive from Phoenix to compete, as others were from neighboring states such as California, Nevada, and Colorado. The weather was mild for a typical Arizona summer day, but with cloud cover and a slight breeze, it was no problem being outside enjoying some pro-am drifting. This night was also the night that the 2017 series champion would be crowned, with the top 3 drivers earning their Formula Drift Pro 2 license.
The evening’s driving was consistent, exciting, and hard fought by all. Unfortunately, a few cars had to bow out of competition due to mechanical problems. [...]
On the second Saturday in September, NASA AZ put on their monthly track day at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. This time, instead of running the East Track, drivers took to the West Track for some early morning racing. The weather turned out to be quite mild for the time of year, as it was mostly overcast with temperatures hovering in the high 80’s. This made for a great day of driving and spectating (oh, and photography). The turn out for this event was very pleasing. Drivers from all experience levels showed up to run their stock daily such as WRX’s, Mustangs, Camaros, and even a Prius, to fully built race cars such as Austin Newmark’s purple Mazda Miata and Ritch Marziale and his Dodge Viper Competition Coupe. The gates opened at 4am for racers to begin their registration and tech inspection, with the first group [...]
Arizona drivers dominated in the 3rd stop of the Southwest Drift Series. The stage was set and the hometown drivers couldn’t have put on a better show as Vegas Drift held its third round of the Southwest Drift Series at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. Drifters from surrounding states and here in Phoenix came to drive their best, as the points chase is on, and so is the race for the season championship. Coming into the weekend, Raz Naor of Los Angeles sat in a solid 1st place with 118 points. Nick Gross (Phoenix), sat in 2nd with 98 points. Andrew Schulte (Phoenix) held 3rd place with 94 points. In 4th place, was Austin Kregle (Phoenix) with 74 points. The day started out with practice in the hot Arizona sun. The XDC style track was set up for high speed coming into the initiation, with clipping [...]
How many of you remember when the only cars on the market boasting 300 horsepower and all-wheel drive were either a Subaru with an engine that had a pancake fetish, or a Mitsubishi with an anime wing that wasn’t a television set? Aside from Pepperidge Farm, nearly most of us born before the turn of the century can relate. Today, after seventeen years, the market for all-wheel drive performance sedans seems saturated.
On June 3rd, racers took to the track at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park to push their cars to the limit on their East Track. The 1.25 mile road course allowed HPDE, Time Attack, and Time Trial racers to stretch their cars legs for NASA’s condensed schedule event. With the Arizona summer in full swing, it was crucial to keep the cars cool and prevent catastrophic overheating. Track gates opened at 4am for racers to begin with their registration and tech inspection. The first group of racers took to the track promptly at 6am. Since this event was only a half day event, opposed to the usual full day or even two-day event, the turnout for all racers was quite spectacular. All groups with varying experience levels led to an abundance of racers showing up, making for some great racing variety and plenty of cars to see. With each group getting 15-20 minutes of track [...]
It’s the 20th Anniversary of Hot Import Nights Saturday June 3rd 2017 hosted at West World Scottsdale Arizona. Roll-in times for the show were said to be around noon that Saturday, but I showed up a bit before noon and was welcomed by an already long line to be let into the venue.
