The Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series (LOORRS) kicked off its season at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler under a perfect Arizona spring afternoon, with racers battling under the sunset and well into the night. This event was the first organized off-road racing event I’ve attended, let alone photographed, so I had high anticipation for experiencing short course racing in person. I did not expect to have the kind of thrilling and adrenaline pumping time I did while shooting. Having trucks and buggies fly by you (literally) at insane speeds while being peppered with huge chunks of dirt made shooting this event both exciting and a little painful, but so worth it. There were nine different classes of racers that showed up to the track that evening to battle it out till the finish. From youngsters driving modified karts, the production UTV class, Pro Lite Unlimited trucks, Pro 2 Unlimited (which saw crossover athletes Brian [...]
“Wait…you guys cover Supercross events, too?!? I thought this was strictly an automotive publication?” I’m sure you are all wondering why CSJ is covering a supercross event, which is a fair question. However, with a new year upon us why not branch out a little bit here and there and explore the various other forms of motorsport and culture that happen here in the valley of the sun? I mean, variety is the spice of life isn’t it? Anyway, enjoy the highlights from Monster Energy’s AMA Supercross event that took place at University of Phoenix Stadium.
This event was the 19th time Supercross took place at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. With a packed house of 54,623 people, riders in both the 250SX and 450SX class tackled timed qualifying, heat races, and the much anticipated main event.
Fan favorite Eli Tomac (Kawasaki) came into Phoenix having already won the first ever 450SX [...]
The last round of the 2017 Formula Drift Black Magic Pro Championship took place at Irwindale Speedway for one final time. The 2017 Southwest Drift Series comes to an end as this weekend, 21 drivers made their way to Musselman Honda Circuit in Tucson, AZ for the last round of the Vegas Drift Southwest Drift series presented by Vegas Drift. Most of the drivers were local who made the short two-hour drive from Phoenix to compete, as others were from neighboring states such as California, Nevada, and Colorado. The weather was mild for a typical Arizona summer day, but with cloud cover and a slight breeze, it was no problem being outside enjoying some pro-am drifting. This night was also the night that the 2017 series champion would be crowned, with the top 3 drivers earning their Formula Drift Pro 2 license.
On the second Saturday in September, NASA AZ put on their monthly track day at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. This time, instead of running the East Track, drivers took to the West Track for some early morning racing. The weather turned out to be quite mild for the time of year, as it was mostly overcast with temperatures hovering in the high 80’s. This made for a great day of driving and spectating (oh, and photography). The turn out for this event was very pleasing. Drivers from all experience levels showed up to run their stock daily such as WRX’s, Mustangs, Camaros, and even a Prius, to fully built race cars such as Austin Newmark’s purple Mazda Miata and Ritch Marziale and his Dodge Viper Competition Coupe. The gates opened at 4am for racers to begin their registration and tech inspection, with the first group [...]
Arizona drivers dominated in the 3rd stop of the Southwest Drift Series. The stage was set and the hometown drivers couldn’t have put on a better show as Vegas Drift held its third round of the Southwest Drift Series at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. Drifters from surrounding states and here in Phoenix came to drive their best, as the points chase is on, and so is the race for the season championship. Coming into the weekend, Raz Naor of Los Angeles sat in a solid 1st place with 118 points. Nick Gross (Phoenix), sat in 2nd with 98 points. Andrew Schulte (Phoenix) held 3rd place with 94 points. In 4th place, was Austin Kregle (Phoenix) with 74 points. The day started out with practice in the hot Arizona sun. The XDC style track was set up for high speed coming into the initiation, with clipping [...]
