The 2017 Southwest Drift Series comes to an end as this weekend, 21 drivers made their way to Musselman Honda Circuit in Tucson, AZ for the last round of the Vegas Drift Southwest Drift series presented by Vegas Drift. Most of the drivers were local who made the short two-hour drive from Phoenix to compete, as others were from neighboring states such as California, Nevada, and Colorado. The weather was mild for a typical Arizona summer day, but with cloud cover and a slight breeze, it was no problem being outside enjoying some pro-am drifting. This night was also the night that the 2017 series champion would be crowned, with the top 3 drivers earning their Formula Drift Pro 2 license.
Arizona drivers dominated in the 3rd stop of the Southwest Drift Series. The stage was set and the hometown drivers couldn’t have put on a better show as Vegas Drift held its third round of the Southwest Drift Series at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. Drifters from surrounding states and here in Phoenix came to drive their best, as the points chase is on, and so is the race for the season championship. The weather at Pikes Peak International Raceway was cold, drizzly, and rainy for Round 2 of the Vegas Drift Southwest Drift Series. Drivers started arriving Thursday and Friday and many came out out to practice Friday evening to familiarize themselves with the layout. The weather was perfect, and had all of us thinking that the next day would be be nothing but the same. We were wrong. Saturday morning practice started early with drivers showing up to the track and getting last minute preparations done on their cars. Battles were fought hard all day by everyone, including the Arizona drivers who made the trek to high altitudes to participate. In the end, Raz Naor of Los Angeles placed 1st, while Steve Mass placed 2nd, and Andrew Schulte placed 3rd. Be sure to check our gallery from the weekends action, and we hope to see you at
It was at that moment, we instantly knew it was show time as the first car left the start line and headed into the first turn of this long drift layout. Our local Arizona drivers meant business claiming the top two positions. Qualifying 1st with 91 points was Austin Kregle in his 1995 Nissan 240sx S14, fresh with a Toyota 2JZ-GTE swap. Kregle worked up until the last minute to ensure his car was properly prepped for Round 1 of competition. With almost zero seat time with the new powerplant, Kregle proved himself a skilled driver as he blazed the track with style and set the bar for the remainder of the competition. For second place qualifier, Nick Gross with his fresh S14 set a strong score of 88 points. After battling engine gremlins in the last rounds of competition in 2016, Nick came back even more determined to earn a shot at [...]
