Vegas Drift: Round 3 Southwest Drift Series Phoenix

Arizona drivers dominated in the 3rd stop of the Southwest Drift Series.
The stage was set and the hometown drivers couldn’t have put on a better show
as Vegas Drift held its third round of the Southwest Drift Series at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. Drifters from
surrounding states and here in Phoenix came to drive their best, as the points chase is
on, and so is the race for the season championship. Coming into the weekend, Raz
Naor of Los Angeles sat in a solid 1st place with 118 points. Nick Gross (Phoenix), sat
in 2nd with 98 points. Andrew Schulte (Phoenix) held 3rd place with 94 points. In 4th
place, was Austin Kregle (Phoenix) with 74 points.
The day started out with practice in the hot Arizona sun. The XDC style track was
set up for high speed coming into the initiation, with clipping points that were sure to let drivers
get wide and allow them to drive aggressively. It was clear that many of the local drivers
were comfortable with their home track, while new comers to the track struggled at
some points. Confidence in the pits was high for the local drivers, leaving both
spectators and drivers wondering just who would podium that evening.

Qualifying runs took place as the sun set and the heat slowly dissipated to a somewhat comfortable
temperature, with tandem battles taking place shortly after.
Top 16 battles seemed to fly by, as local drivers made light work of out-of- state
competitors. Arizona drivers claimed all three spots on the podium that night. DJ Lloyd
(Phoenix) and his 2JZ powered Subaru WRX placed 3rd, with Nick Gross’ and his LS
powered 240SX placing 2nd, and Austin Kregle driving his 2JZ powered 240SX to a 1st
place victory.
The standings are now set as the final round of the Southwest Drift series is to
take place on September 16th at Musselman Honda Circuit in Tucson, AZ. Nick Gross
now sits in 1st place with 153 points, Raz Naor holds 2nd with 142 points, Andrew
Schultz is in 3rd with 136 points, Austin Kregle is in 4th place with 134 points, DJ Lloyd
has made a jump to 5th place with 85 points, with Matt Haugen in 6th with 80 points.
The season champion will be crowned at the end of this round, with Formula Drift Pro 2
licenses up for grabs to the Top 3 in the series points standings.
